Why I do my own maintenance

Agreed... Most anything that these high volume quick turn-around shops touch, can be dented, cross threaded or improperly assembled and torqued. That applies to the oil filter and drain plug(s), as well... Soiled and scuffed up interior is a bonus.

I've had those kind of things happen to me before, lesson learned. Those teen-agers working on your car know less than most adults about your car and couldn't care less.

yep and that is why I do what I can as well. Once my friend took his fathers Cadillac to Jiffy Lube back in the days when this stuff started popping up in the early 90's
for oil change. They screwed up the plug, stripped it and tried to cover it up. made it hard to prove it was them after driving away and few days later, needless to say it failed, all oil came out and
fried the engine. What a disaster to prove they did it and get them to pay!

Yeah, buddy!! Welcome to the era where nearly everything is a pale substitute for something else, that used to have real value...including service.

The quick oil change chains are sweatshops, frequently staffed with the best slave labor sub-minimum wage will buy. Dealerships aren't much better; going rate is .1-.2 flat-rate hours. It takes 10-15 minutes to properly drain the old oil, FFS! Something's gonna give. I once watched a senior mechanic (seriously, decades of experience and very skilled guy) put 12 quarts into a 5-quart oil pan. Under the rushed pace, he overlooked the drain plug.

I know a number of people who've lost engines when oil filters were left loose, or installed with the gasket from the previous filter left stuck in place or a loose drain plug, by a quick oil change joint. And, of course, there's the quality of the filters used:poop:

As much as the shop floor gets harder & colder with each passing year, I'll do my own oil changes & brake jobs, thankyouverymuch.

I do all my own maintenance on my cars, truck and motorcycles, I'm way to picky and have to clean up after them. My god friend only takes his car to the dealership for his oil changes, I've tried to tell him that if he thinks a mechanic is changing his oil he's crazy, they all have lube techs these days.

I to try to do everything I can. Had tires put on my toy hauler not to long ago and as I did the walk around during pickup noticed the lugs weren't even tightened done on one of the rims. The one thing thing that really pissed me off is one time I bought my daughter a new bike for her 8th birthday from one of the big sporting chain stores. I fell victim to the old let us put the bike together by one of our trained technicians. Only 20 bucks so I said what the hell. Daughter was having her proud moment on her new bike birthday morning until the pedal fell off and she crashed. Point being it just drives me nuts that I feel I have to double check any work a " trained professional " does. :102:

Funny you should say the words "trained professional". In the Jiffy scam video the company said they will retrain their employees or provide additional training, haaaaaaa, how do you train someone to actually perform work? Truth is they already know how to do it, they are just lazy and don't want to work. Training in the case of oil change places is probably to teach the lazies how not to get caught at fraud.

The "trained professionals" (aka kids) at jippy-lobe have the music cranked & always look like they can't wait to get off work and grab a cool one at the nearest bar. In this town, its usually about a 100 ft that way---->:24:

Can't blame them too much as I was like that when I made the min wage (back then $2.37/hr lol).

Will change my oil from here on. Cheaper and just better piece of mind.

Good point, for the wages most times you're going to get entry level people or people who jump job to job.
