Recently acquired a 77 CT70 in a trade that I plan on fixing up this fall/winter. Looking for a few parts that I know I'm going to need.
Battery Box (one I have has rot on bottom). K3 thru 79 are all the same?
Headlight Chrome Trim Ring This one has the extra screw at about the 5:00 o'clock position. From what I can tell, K1 thru about 81 are all the same?
Speedo Cable, black (low priority)
Tail light base (maybe). Not sure if mine will clean up or not. Has heaving pitting in a spot or 2. K3 - thru 79 are the same?
Does anyone know the number stamped on the carb? I checked carb listing file here and the carb number, which is stamped on the flange, is not shown. K3 thru 77 are the same?
This is my first attempt at sprucing up a later model CT70. If you have any of these parts, please post or drop me a PM.
How bad is the rust? I'm reasonably certain that the battery carriers you listed are, in fact, the same. However, K3-later parts availability is sporadic. Unless the carrier is structurally weak, the bottom portion doesn't matter a whole lot...other than your own peace-of-mind, perhaps. Even in a worst-case scenario...rusted -through along the bottom...it can be repaired, then re-plated. These things usually turn out very nicely, show-quality, in the visible areas. It's more a matter of cost.
That HL ring is a tough item to replace, because most of these came equipped with sealed beam bulbs...which are stupidly expensive, and not very good. The extra screw is an aiming screw. There are some that have it with the "offroad" reflector assembly. They're few & far between but unobtainium rare. If you find one, it's worth rechroming as you'll have a desirable OEM part that uses the cheap $3.50 replaceable bulbs. Be forewarned, K1-`79 are different from the K0 type, which uses a different mounting setup, i.e. K0 doesn't interchange with any later models.
AFAIK, K0-77 used the same carb. A fellow member posted a model number by bike model/year table; can't recall who it was. If you just want a carb that looks right and works properly, your choice...rebuild a vintage original, source NOS or a TB reproduction from any number of established vendors.
