CT70 cross-country ride

Hi guys, I would be interested in a long distance ride with a group on June July or August 2016. I have a 1974 ct 70 with only 700 miles, would like to try to wear it out. I will be in the Badlands of South Dakota area those three months.

As long as the oil spinner has been cleaned recently (first cleaning is due at 600 miles, according the the old manuals), you change oil regularly and the carb is in good working order, you're not going to hurt it, let alone wear it out, any time soon. You should be able to ride essentially flat-out until the tank runs dry. In stock form, it's an "unstressed" engine. Circa 2003 there was a widely-circulating blog covering two riders traveling along the entire western coastline of both South and North America...on Cub 50s. They made it.

The biggest hurdles you're going to face have to do with the vast amount of acreage we know as "the lower 48 states" (draw a 1K mile radius from where you're going to ride and you'll find very few major cities) and roads with speed limits that are friendly to a 35-40mph stock bike. The two conditions combined make for one tall order. Best of luck to you. This could be quite an adventure.

Gas station spacing will also be a problem in South Dakota unless you have a five gallon jug in your support vehicle.

I used to be stationed in Rapid City, SD.

Would you ever find yourself further than 300 miles away from a gas station? I don't think so. I don't think you'd find yourself more than 100 miles from a gas station. I think a 2.5 gallon aux tank on a back rack, plus your internal tank, plus a small side mount would be plenty to carry and not be too worrisome. I would basically ride it until the 2.5 gallon tank went to about .5 gallons and then use the internal tank and small external tank as the reserve, which should give you close to 150 miles.

Right now, I run my bikes with a gcraft extra tank and a gallon on the back and I can run a 150 mile day without stopping at a station. I also have 1 liter fuel bottles if I am going on a longer ride.

I think about an hour at a time would be time for a break, there are lots of small towns off the interstate all over SD.
