Headlight Ear Woes

This has to be the hardest piece to find. I have a '72 K1 I am restoring and it seems that every bike ever built has been dropped and has bent ears. Has anyone attempted to have replacement ears fabricated? I can't even imagine what that would cost!!!!

K1s occupy the middle ground between the K0, which are made from thicker steel and the later K2-`79 models. Honda went to a two-ply design when they added turn signals. Those are impossible to repair and the turn signals are located in a way that guarantees damage.

As long as all the metal is there, it's usually possible to repair the single-thickness K1 ears. That's the preferred method. It is also possible to have new ones fabbed, without breaking the bank. Getting exact replicas, with every subtle nuance of OEM isn't going to happen. The overall size, shape and location can be replicated. Have both ears replaced as a set and you'll have an invisible repair.

I hammered on mine for a week before I was happy with them. Still not perfect but after primer and paint were applied they looked ok.

Hey Chris... I know what you're going through, I too had a real tough time trying to find some good fork ears and covers for my bike too, my bike has K1 top and bottom clamps. I ended up making my own. I went to a local metal supply house with my calipers and found the correct ID of my chinese fork set-up (27mm) then I bought some 1/4 inch t6061 aluminum plate and traced out the exact size of the oem Honda ears. I had a buddy weld them up for me and spent some time cleaning them up. I had another bike going to powder coat so I just threw in the pieces to get done aswell.. I think I paid less than 20 bucks for the material and the welding was cheap too.. The best part about this mod is that the fork ears are VERY strong and stout. Here are some pics for you...

Have fun........ :D

Hi BB, you asked a while ago about ordering K1 ears from David Spears in the UK. I was also looking for crome collers and K1 ears. I looked high and low. I bought a pair of ears from David Spears (NOS) gold ones and they are perfect condition! (cost $50) At the same time I was glued to Ebay looking at fork assemblies. Prices range $50(full of dents) to $200+(nice but to much money) I also ended up with a nice fork assemlby from Ebay, with shipping $168. I was going to buy two sets from David Spears but he only had one set. We talk via E-mail. I would buy from him again if I was in a pinch! Regards, bsveal
