New Addition To The Family, WOOHOO!!!

Alright, something came up and the monkeybiking mission got put on hold, same as any potential sailing voyage... no big deal, there will be other days, and it's REALLY hot and humid out there, so no worries. But I have some excellent news for y'all: we have a new addition to our family!!! While I was bagging some merchandise at the big ol' WallyWorld on Highland Avenue in National City, I saw some betta fish in the aquarium aisle, and I thought how cool it would be to have an aquarium set up so the cats can trip on it, LOL.

Wound up spending nearly $200 more than I originally intended, but we now have a choice aquarium with glow-in-the-dark arches, a large hollow DinoCroc skull, some plastic glow-in-the-dark plants, cool gravel, phony jewels, the whole nine yards. LEDs under the lid, and heaps of supplies to keep the whole shebang a going concern. Took all the necessary steps, introduced the fish, and now he's happy as a b@stard on Father's Day, cruising around his new digs and checking everything out. He's eating too, I put some BettaMin Flakes in there and he's macking, LOL.

Dixie is lying in front of the tank watching the betta as he swims around. I'm saving the surprise for Sage & Wingnut, who are both sleeping out under the shotgun shack carport, where a nice breeze funnels through and keeps 'em cool, LOL. The Stalag 13 gig didn't last long for Wingnut, he's already out and around, no worries. Can't wait to see his reaction once he figures out there's a live betta swimming around the tank... I already Wing-proofed the cover or hood of the aquarium, so the little betta will be safe. Wing might try to scoop him out through the feeding hole, but that'll be a trick he won't pull off, I reckon.

Anyway, I need to pick a good name for this little Siamese Fighting Fish, something to do with monkeybiking, 10-4? At the Australian MiniRiders website, Shearer has a dog named Sprocket... what cool name can I apply to this little fish??? A little help here... howzabout y'all throw out a few names for this little firebrand? The internal sides of the tank have some kind of reflective coating on 'em, and every time the betta sees his own reflection, he goes wild and jerks around... just what I want to keep the cats occupied, LOL. Wingnut is gonna go bananas when he sees this little snack item cruising around in front of him. I bought some more disposable cameras, and I'll be sure to break one out to catch Little Wing staring at the fish, LOL.

Boy, this little fish is QUICK when he wants to be, he darts around like nobody's business. I'm sitting here in front of the big ol' electric fan I also bought today at WallyWorld (that was the reason I went there in the first place), and I'm having a cold beer which tastes delicious. I had to take a second shower once I got back to the house, the humidity out there is pretty fierce. Hey, talk about lazy, my fan has a remote, LOL. That way, when I'm sharing quality time with the cats on my rack, I can switch speeds without disturbing them, 10-4??? Modern technology is great, don'tcha know??? If I'm not careful, I'll wind up joining that "obesity epidemic" here in America, LOL.

Well, time to mosey on out to the kitchen and grab another longneck, that first one went down pretty fast. I wonder how I can give the fish some beer without affecting the water quality in the tank? Bake it down into beer pellets or something, except that would cause loss of alcohol... hmm, I'll hafta dwell on this one for awhile. Maybe I'll just give the fish some chronic, that should make things interesting, LOL. Next thing I know, he'll be raiding the fridge and staying up late watching TV, 10-4? LOL. Reminds me of the time some clown and I put beer in the hummingbird feeder: the first hummer to hit the feeder took a big ol' chug before flying off erratically, narrowly missing the neighbor's chimney. Poor little dude got hammered with that F-18 metabolism, LOL. No worries, he was back the next day, he just had to go home and sleep it off.

Alright, I'm outta here for now, color me gone, don't forget to break with those names for the fish, aye? Little dude is so cool, he's cruising around and checking out the DinoCroc skull I put in the tank, it has a nice long hollow area so the fish can hide if Wingnut's staring gives the betta the willies, LOL. "DUDE!!! ENOUGH WITH THE STARING ALREADY!!!" LOL. Oh, yeah, I forgot to describe the fish: his head is black, but the rest of him fades to this bitchin' purple color, and he has a little red on his pectoral fins... is that the right word? The fins on the bottom of the fish, up forward. Okay, now I'm outta here, gotta go sling my question to those Crusty Australian Demons O' Dirt next, LOL. HASTA LA VISTA!!! :red70:

My name for the fish would be Stroker, Hopefully the rhino cush won't make him do the ''backstroke'' LOL! 10-4?

I had a beta once, really cool lil guy. He was the only fish I had who was happy to see me when I came home, no lie. He'd swim from where he was and start dancin around at the end of the glass where I was.

When they're happy they make a nest of bubbles and kick back in the center of it. So don't worry that's normal behavior. Mine was Royal blue w/orange highlight.
Call him Wheelie!:)

BTW CJ two betas in one tank will end in a death duel. They don't call em' Siamese Fighting Fish for nothin!

Whoa, cool names!!! LOL. So far, we have:

Stroker

Nitro (or Nitro Fish)

Wheelie

Ratchet

DAX or Dax (do I use all caps?)

Redline (or Red-Line? I came up with that one, due to the thin red lines the fish has on his pectoral fins, LOL)

And I'm sure there will be more... no worries, I'll use 'em all when I put some more small fish in there with the Betta. First I gotta figure out which are compatible, 10-4? An Australian hand said that Tetras and Guppies would be okay, as long as they're not the same color as the Betta. Hey, I copy that bit about the fish recognizing its owner, I was sitting in front of the tank earlier, having a cold beer or two (not going off tonight, it has been a long hot & humid day), and I swear the fish was looking at me, as well as the cats, LOL. Didn't see him actually flip off the cats with a one-fingered salute, but he sure acts unafraid... might be a different story (and ending) if Little Wing gets his paw in there, LOL.

P.S. While roaming the aisles at WallyWorld today, I saw some sort of General Mills cereal with Star Wars box covers as collectibles, LOL. Yoda, Darth Vader, et al. As if George Lucas needs the money, LOL. Dude must be richer than Croesus.

My mom used to have a black Lab that adopted ME for some reason. She named him Buster(I thought that was a stupid/too common name). One day in my garage 15plus years ago, my older brother was drinking alot and listening to the stereo real loud. It was playing Doctor Love by KISS. While petting him and singing, he started calling him BusterLove. That name stuck with that dog ever since.lol. I miss that dog. He was dumb as a post, but very loving and loyal. He loved to run along beside me when I rode my K1 through hay fields. After 10plus years of living in the country, he decided to start chasing cattle/calf's for some reason and had to go to my moms fenced in yard. One day I pulled up to her house on my K1 and he started bawling/yelping when I drove away. It broke my heart to leave him there.

Quick update: I gotta run a friend out to Lakeside to pick up his truck, so I'm stopping at a pet shop on the way back and buying a few more fish, enough to use all those names, 10-4? I think this Betta should be called Nitro... because he's so explosive in his movements, LOL. Y'all should've seen Little Wing trying to hunt Nitro this morning, I turned on the aquarium LEDs and lit up the joint, and Wing leapt up on the table to stalk the fish... Wingnut the Great White Hunter, LOL. I took some more pics, hope they turn out well enough to see the little fish. Reminds me of that radio ad awhile back: "FISHAY, FISHAY..." LOL. Back later with another update on the fish scene, ADIOS!!!

We'll use both names: like a monkeybiking aquarium novice, I bought heaps o' fish, LOL. In fact, we're gonna need a few more names for the other little finned varmints I purchased at Petco on Sports Arena Blvd... or whatever they call it now, LOL. That whole crowded street scene gets worse every year, take it from an old school local. Next thing ya know, there'll be corporate sponsorship of pothole repair, big ol' billboards off to either side with artwork depicting how the road will be once the potholes are fixed. Damn, I got sidetracked again, just reflecting upon the nasty potholes I encountered today: you can only dodge so many, like a video game, LOL. That's just wrong. Meh, the heat is wearing down here, about time for another cold longneck, I usually grab two at a time in this sort of weather, saves overall energy output, LOL. Reminds me of that Pistols line: "I'M SO LA-A-A-A-Z-Y, I CAN'T EVER BE BOTHERED!!!" Damn, that song was AP£$H!T, LOL... I skated many ramps and pools to that sort o' music, but I already wrote everything there is for me to write upon that topic. Look for it in my upcoming book, whenever I get the thing uploaded. I might just sling it por nada, just to make the ULTIMATE STATEMENT, LOL. Okay, time for me to plot a course towards the fridge for another cold beer or two, this sorta weather actually cuts back on my midday consumption, 10??? Now that it's cooling off, it may be time to ramp up the intake, LOL. More on these fish I bought once I utilize the latrine, resupply, etc., etc., etc.

I use to luv drinkin a cool beer all Saturday afternoon & all Sat night! :19:

Wish I was still a young cat...:16:

NITRO The Bully Gettin' SCHOOLED, LOL...

Well, I've read up on the "Nitrogen Cycle" and "New Tank Syndrome" in various publications, and my bro Chris in Missouri once knew some gal who wrote a book upon fish-keeping and aquarium maintenance, the book titled SCHOOL OF FISH (LOL). Good book for aquarium newbs, that's for sure... I introduced a bunch o' fish to the tank today, to the tune of $62.73, aye? I don't want these expensive little finned varmints going belly up, so I'm taking a "crash course" on aquarium life. Well, most of the critters were relatively cheap, small as they are, but I went overboard in my usual manner. Can't spend too much time on this, here's a list of the fish added to the tank today, along with some fresh treated water, LOL.

---One Angelfish @ $12.99 (This will be DAX, otherwise known as "The Equalizer"---he backs down Nitro, no problem, LOL)

---Five Neon Tetras @ $12.45 (The Redline Crew, LOL)

---One Black-Skirted Tetra @ $2.49 (Vegas Hooker)

---Two Common Plecos @ $5.98 (Bert & Ernie)

---One Painted Platy @ $1.99 (Paris Hilton)

---Three Assorted Guppies @ $8.97 (The Three Stooges, a.k.a. Lugnut, Slingshot, and Wingnut, LOL)

---One Bala Shark @ $4.99 (Stroker, perfect name for this long lean critter)

---One Red-Eyed Tetra @ $2.49 (Ratchet, been up all night wrenching, LOL)

---One Lyre-Tailed Dalmatian Molly @ $3.99 (Wheelie the Molly takes no lip from the Betta, LOL)

---One Black Neon Tetra @ $2.49 (Meh, staple a dead possum to his skull and call him Donald Trump, LOL)

Dangit, gotta go, I'm outta here, color me gone, ADIOS, MUCHACHOS!!!

LOL...

Well, Boyz, I have some bad news... DAX didn't make it, and neither did Ratchet (he turned his last wrench... sob). I think Donald Trump may have gone to that Great Aquarium In The Sky as well, I know I fished a third floating corpse out of the tank this morning, but I didn't look at him too closely. More bad news: I have to drain most of the water and replace it with fresh clean water, the tank is a freakin' disaster right now, 10-4? Note to self: no more nugs o' chronic in the tank. Like a fool, I rearranged things in the tank last night while hammered, and that stirred up an unholy mess, with the water all murky, ugh. It doesn't smell nice and clean either, which is why I'm going to change the water, leaving just enough of the old stuff to keep that nitrogen cycle going. I already drained and replaced some water, swapping the filter as well in an effort to keep the other fish in good shape.

Uh-oh, looks like one of The Three Stooges is on his way out, he's still alive but he's doing some weird death dance in the tank, floating vertically and spiraling upward. Dang, this aquarium business is tougher than it looks. Some of the fish seem to be doing quite well: Stroker (a personal favorite), Nitro, the entire Redline Crew, Wheelie the Molly, Paris Hilton, the Vegas Hooker, Bert & Ernie, a couple of The Stooges (the third looks to be toast), and any others I might have omitted. I thought the larger Pleco (Bert) was MIA this morning, as if Wingnut had fished him out of the tank, but I eventually located him upside down in the DinoCroc skull. Thought he was dead and just floating in there, but when I went to pick up the skull, he darted on out of there, LOL. Alright, I gotta get going and make things right, might need some nitrifying bacteria as well, guess I'd better fish out this dead Stooge first. ADIOS!!!

P.S. All dead soldiers (finned variety) were given good Christian burials in the back yard, the tropical fish going under the Plumeria (skirl o' bagpipes as Scottish funeral dirge sounds here).

I think I accidently killed my little girl's fish by adding tap water to the little tank. My wife told me later it needs pure water. Relieved me greatly that Sharon wasn't really attached to it. Yes these aquariums are tougher than they look. I thought you were just supposed to keep the filter clean, feed them, and add water every once in a while.

BTW, I bet those cats will take those fish off yer hands 24/7.

nice school you got there.

make sure you keep up with the water quality. we had fish for years… a good filter, though pricey, and water that stays close to 7 on the pH scale will keep them alive for years.. or at least several months. where you're at, i don't know if a heater is of the upmost of importance… but always nice to have.

I had a 30gal tropical fish tank for about 3 yrs. Every tank needs a heater in the winter and a good quality filter pump. The filter needs to be cleaned every few weeks, the tank scrubbed every few days with algae brush.

I still have my $48-pump & heater. it's a good one. Might be time to eBay it now that the last of the fish are gone.

Naaaah, it's all good, I caught the "New Tank Syndrome" before it killed the others. I actually siphoned off the old cr@ppy water with my gravel cleaner, putting the fish into a bucket momentarily with the operational filter in the bucket, then I got rid of the rest of the funky water and rinsed all the gravel and the tank before making things right. This time around, I used distilled water, but I added AquaSafe anyway to deal with any residual rinse water, 10-4? I also added Quick Start with nitrifying bacteria, which I should've done last time but didn't, hence the funky death trap. I also rinsed all the features in the tank (fake plants, arches, DinoCroc skull, etc), then added the nice new water... the fish are all heller lively now, darting every which way and having a good time. Nitro the Betta is swimming through the jaws of the DinoCroc skull as I key this, and he just swam through an eye socket a few minutes ago, LOL (looks heller cool).

My buddy Stroker is riding high, and the Redline Crew are acting like their usual crackerhead selves. Funny fish, the Redline Crew, those Neon Tetras are hilarious... Wingnut the Cat trips on the Redline Crew, LOL. Let's see, Paris Hilton (Painted Platy) is being a flaming b!tch and harassing one of the larger Guppies, one of the remaining Stooges. I think I'm gonna hafta drop the other Stooges, we can't have just Two Stooges, that sounds ridiculous... so we'll name one Donald Trump to bring "The Donald" back from the dead (so he can go independent and win the election, LOL), and we'll name the other Ratchet to make up for his loss. The Vegas Hooker (Black-Skirted Tetra) is doing fine, of course... STDs can't kill that fish, so a simple water change is minor. Wheelie the Molly is healthy as can be, and even the Plecos Bert & Ernie are moving around and doing their jobs.

For some reason, Bert (the larger Pleco) likes to hang out upside down, don't ask me why. He's moving around under the filter right now, the varmint. Ah, here's my pal Stroker, he's so cool... I like the way he twitches every few seconds, LOL. He'd fit right in down at CMH (County Mental Health), don'tcha know??? Alright, that's all I have to say about the aquarium scene, maybe this time everything will work out right. Note to self: NO MORE NUGS O' CHRONIC IN THE TANK!!! LOL... did I mention that the nug was a hybrid? Something called ChemWreck, part Trainwreck and part Chem-whatever. It figures, a strain of weed partly called Trainwreck would send the tank into disaster mode, LOL. Actually, the failure to add live nitrifying bacteria to the tank at the outset was probably the real root of the problem.

Going back to Petco to buy an air bubbler and perhaps a second filter for the tank. I want this tank water to remain sparkling clean, no repeat of that funky cr@p I dealt with earlier. No new fish till I know the tank is good to go, all fish listed as survivors yesterday are still fine, and the nitrifying bacteria seem to be doing their job, LOL. I just wanna make sure the tank remains in proper condition, no foul-smelling funk in my room, even if the room is roughly 22'-24' square, 10-4??? Monkeybike inspection later today in preparation for tomorrow's ride, WAHOOOOOOOO!!! LOL.
