QA50 Build

I recently picked up a Qa50 for 150.00 off craigs list that needed some work for sure! It was all there but mostly broken or
wore out.The coil was not bolted down (broken post) but i managed to get the motor to fire after giving the carb a good cleaning out for a few minutes. Now its a basket project tore down to the frame. I've searched the net for parts for days to find bits and pieces, i think i have them all now.I started striping the frame, tank and forks for repaint.
Pics to come soon.

good find, I had one, a 74 model. It ran real good but they have inherent habit of popping out of second gear. Honda had a service bullten concerning it but mine was built after the service bulliten came out. so they obviously never got it right. Good luck with it, I wish I had kept mine.

ive herd of that problem too,i haven't had the chance to "run" it yet threw the gears. Is there a fix for that ? It would suck if i put it all together and i had to pull the motor again!

Can't see everything in photos, obviously. Still, doesn't look bad to my aging eyes and your prep work looks solid. The Achilles heel of the QA50 is the tranny; it's weak and the service parts are hard to find. If yours has a healthy trans, the road to a first-rate resto should be reasonably smooth.

looks like a decent bike. I had one, like racerx says the tranny is weak. mine popped out of second gear, ran fine in first. I saw a fully restored QA50 on ebay a couple years ago for 6500.00 dollars and and the guy said it occasionally pops out of gear. Point being if yours pops out of second , don't spend a lot of money on the restoration, that's why I upgraded to a ct70 1980. and on Monday I got from craigslist a 1971 CL70HK2 cant wait to fire it up. pics coming soon in another post. Good luck on your QA50 and keep us posted.

I recently finished a refresh on a QA50. I have ridden the bike around the neighborhood and to a friend's house a few miles away with only a mild slip of 2nd gear. It never completely came out. I was concerned with this problem and found some videos that might help you out. Hopefully mine will be fine for the amount of riding I do.

update > I had a little spare time so jumped on the QA for a few;) The hubs and bars were looking pretty bad so i decided to see if could clean them up. The hub came out ok but the bars on the other hand im not :47: happy with. One of the lever mounts is broken and if i fix it by welding on a new piece or mount the chrome will be toast!
Man i wish i could find some decent bars.IMAG0032.jpgIMAG0033.jpg

update:
I was able to to do a few things today, spending most of my time cleaning parts for assembly. I got the rear hub done as well as the front forks cleaned up . IMAG0032.jpgIMAG0044.jpgIMAG0047.jpgIMAG0048.jpg
Next was the rusty rims, but dis-assembly came to a halt when i had no way of breaking the bead lol Any ideas on that guys ?IMAG0045.jpg

Hey your refinishing looks great! I noticed the double nuts on your valve stems. I like those and they are hard to find. They're brass and were standard issue (I think). Anyway if you take care they buff up real nice. I use a nylon washer between the rim and hub to keep the paint from scraping.IMG_1017.jpg

Update:
I went over to my buddy's shop again to tackle this tire bead problem haha. I told him about all the different ways people have got them off lol and we decided to resort to the huge vise ! That went well, we just stuck the whole tire in there just out side the rim and squeezed. Bam! one bead was off in no time and the tube was fine "relief" but the other side was still set firm. I pulled the rim out and the tube and was left with one side still together. i said "vise wont work now what" ? Well we had a Redneck moment and in the 20 ton press it went. We found a bucket that fit perfect around the rim and let it have it. It worked perfect ! for first one but we repeated the process with the next tire and the bucket crumbled to my dismay lol Anyhow the tires are off intact and the tubes will live another day.
