The Project begins

Looks great & fun project. I can't help but notice the battery and decal ( remove and discard) and that is exactly what you should do with the battery. They always find a way of leaking and rusting out some part of the bike . You should go for the gel type inexpensive and trouble free. Just my opinion :D Your seat, is that one of the aftermarket ones we see on ebay ? Looks nice.

I use a gel cell in the racecar because it is laying down. this one should be ok for now. Its dry right now as i am in the assembly stage. yes the seat is an aftermarket cover from ebay $29.00 The pan and foam are oem and i just replaced the cover and the anti rip chord that runs around the lip of the pan. getting the engine rebuild next month. Hey ! looking great. Keep us posted. As for the battery, The problem I had was because of the over flow tube. I have an exhaust pipe that passes under the engine to end in a high pipe. The vapors wound up on the exhaust chrome , and the swing arm. Made a hell of a mess. Never did manage to completly clean up my exhaust. And had to repaint the swing arm.

That's GREAT! I can see your grin from here. Now get some plates on it so you don't get a kink in your neck.

Ok heres the reason i couldnt get it running. It turns out the final gremlin was the drift key on the crank was so worn down that the flywheel actually moved on the shaft, causing the timing to be off just enough that it wouldnt start. I moved the flywheel to the correct position torqued her down and it started on the second kick. Its been a long time commin from when i bought the first parts on ebay to the rideable bike. Stickers a few lighting glitches and a last nut and bolt check on everything and its ready for its first race at Blackhawk farms in April as a pit bike. I might get a title for it and get a plate just to pound out the miles on the roads around the house. Tada. Dean :monkey: :D

Cool biz, Dean. Firing engine for the first time, along with the inaugural ride are always a nice payoff after working on a project for some time. I assume that you replaced the woodruff key. Still, you might want to get some hours on the bike well in advance of your trip. Every build entails a few minor adjustments/problems, initially. Best to give those a chance to show up while you have easy access to tools and can wait for some minor, yet potentially vacation-ruining, small part to arrive.

Racer: It was very gratifying. I have some issues with wiring right now, ( no horn or tailight yet) But by the time we go to the track next month it will be good to go. Also when i go to the track, i have more tools than your average tech at your favorite car dealer lol. its amaziing the tools that you need while maintaining a race car. So the little honda is in good (tool) hands lol. next is ordering the stickers and a few little parts. One setback is one of the manifold bolts is stripped where it bolts to the top of the engine. Nothing a little tap and new bolt cant fix though. However it makes it a bitch to try and get it to idle right now. Dean
