Didn’t take long to tear it down. No visible damage on any trans component. The why from 4th to 3rd. Secondary 2nd gear is moving right and at the same time primary 3rd is moving left. Not only can they bind on their respective future locations but done just right on each other. I watched it happen several times. 4th to 3rd is where the trans hung up. The secondary shaft actually attempts to move right and when assembled the right case won’t let it. Suspect??? The shift drum... that could explain a lot of what’s been going on. I’m won’t be solving this one. Going to install AHP 1dn 3up I have to get one first and more gaskets.

I'm seeing the countershaft binding inside the gear bores (figuratively speaking). The solution is to find out why/what/how and make the correction. I would think that excessive wear, with the shift drum assembly, is something you would have caught long before now. Maybe check any splined washers that were replaced, as well as gear movement (lateral) on the shafts. The sliding gears (the ones that move with gear changes) should do so freely. Just a reminder (probably unnecessary), splined washers only go between spinning (non-splined bore) gears and the C-clips on the shafts. Incorrectly assembled gear clusters are beyond a longshot; that said, after all the twists & turns of this saga, it's worth checking the easy stuff. Dunno about you but, personally, I'd be wondering "wtf?" until I had a definitive answer...which could be a ver-r-r-r-ry long time.

Once your new tranny arrives, you could compare the assembly details to your existing gearbag...ummm...box.

If your dead set on getting a NEW Transmission, and if you don't mind waiting for a wile, you can send me the entire Trans and I could take a look at it for you! I have been trying to take apart this CT70H engine during my few minutes of lunch break. I could drop the Trans in this case and try to see what going on. Hey Kirrbby, do you still have that CT70H Crankcase that has a Hole in the end of the Mainshaft? Or another JUNK one that I could put in the Milling Machine and Window it ?

Thanks Roy.

Thanks. At least some good news. I have a nice one removed from the CRF70 motor I bought for the cases. All the parts have shipped. Looking forward to doing this one more time.

The big difference is tooth contact area. The new/12v style pinion makes full-width contact, whereas the old 6v style (with the moving pinion gear providing the engagement/disengagement) has ~50-60%. With a high-compression tune, this big, it matters.

Sorry, I forgot about this.
I DO have the XL70 left side, and I think I can find a right side to use for the cause. Do you want me to round them up?? Cases to be chopped for science?

I'm willing to spring for the shipping if you're willing to put in the work, and then be the...windowed cases transmission checker guy.

OK Kirrbby, That would be great! But only send something that will never be used again.
Thanks Roy.

The XL70 left case is in my scrapper. I listed it up on eBay for $1...9.50 shipped, I think it was, and it never got a bid.

IIhave a few junk right cases, all have broken mounts for the shift drum detent arm. They won't work for this job. I think I have one with a busted engine/frame mount. It COULD be welded up and doctored etc. But it's $50 worth of work, to save a $25 part.
So...I have a set of cases that will work great for your windowed lower end. The left side is filthy. I hope to clean it up a bit before I pack and ship. But I will definitely be shipping these parts to you when time allows.

Honestly...I could probably send you a junk...every other engine part too, if you want them. lol.
Crank, clutch, flywheel, cylinderpistonhead and a sparkplug. I bet I would be able to find a complete engine to window.

Dang...I LIKE that idea. I'd like to have one of those myself. Seeing as how I work at a metal fabricating plant, I could probably get it done too.
I might be able to do most of it myself with a sawzall and BFH :)

Thanks CJ. I'm pretty sure you're my biggest fan. I keep telling wifey, CJ says, Kirby's the man, but she's not buying into it. I think, that she thinks, that SHE'S the man.

Dang woman. I KNOW a lot of them, but I don't UNDERSTAND a single one.

So...you figure that he'll post more results here... after the divorce?o_O

I was quoting a movie, but it’s a kids movie (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) so I doubt anyone has seen it or remembers such an obscure line, but it seemed appropriate given Kirby’s value to the Congregation of the Holy CT70. ;)

You're right, haven't seen that flick...though I'd likely as not have remembered the line. My mind is a library of mostly arcane stuff. Wasn't aware that there was a CT70 congregation but, FWIW I still recall the late, lamented, "Church of Latter Day Rat Motors".:ROFLMAO:
