leaking just above the serial numbers - ideas?

Hello...I have just completed a rebuild of a CT110 motor and it leaks coming somewhere around the serial numbers. I have replaced the seal twice so fairly confident that is not the source. I've pulled it apart a few times and see that the area by the counter sprocket is dry but the little square where the footpeg bolt goes in is oily . Any others have ideas about where the oil can come from?

I've had 2 motors where people have cracked the cases toward the inside by cranking in a too long screw. Could it be leaking right out of that foot peg mounting hole? Or maybe the rear lower stator cover hole? Might be able to try some plumbers tape on that bolt to see if it stops the leak.

  • Stator...one of the O-rings, or the crank seal
  • Gasket leak at the case screw directly above where you're finding the seepage
  • Case gasket leak above the footrest...the oil telegraphs to the mount
  • Cracked case casting, from an overly-long bolt bottoming out inside the footrest mounting hole, or the flywheel cover mounting hole nearest the oil leak.

How about "wrong gasket"? I tried to install a non-dual transmission gasket on there...didn't see why it would have made a difference but apparently it did.
