YellowBullet III - The Refresh

Thanks a bunch racerx. Of course I hammered ‘em! And, I did manage to bite into the tube a smidge with the vise grip teeth, but I don’t see any bending and it’s well above the throw of the moving pieces. (Thankfully.). I did drop the lower / outer shock housing *right* on the rim (naturally) and it dented pretty easily. I went to bend it back and snapped clean off. Those are soooooft. :/

I wire brushed and lubed the tubes. (YAY. Doing something right!)

Regarding the tank, since I’ve put a couple different chemicals into it now (rust remover, WD40) is there a tried-and-true method or chemical that’ll get rid of any-and-all residue? I don’t think I’ve done a flawless job, so POR-15 may be the ticket.

Ouch! Those fork leg parts look brutal, in pix. They're probably fine. You're correct, it's the seal-swept area that matters, with the inner. And, the outer/lower looks to have plenty of snapring land left, the chip won't show post-assembly.

As for a tired-and-true tank prep method...plain, old-fashioned, meticulousness. Get a dental mirror, to verify the otherwise unseen surfaces are 100% rust-free. Phosphoric acid, applied to a petroleum-residue-free surface, given enough time to do its work, is very effective and the phosphate coating left behind is a plus. Beyond that, just make sure that the surfaces are dry & clean before the sealer goes on.

First pretty weekend day in forever, so I slapped her back together. Although I’d say she’s *way* stronger, smoother, quieter than YBII, I started having trouble with throttling and idling once it warmed up. It did well on a 15 minute warm up that never exceeded 25mph. If i baby it through the sputtering and backfiring, it purrs like a kitty. Back down to low and slow, and she wants to die when throttled.

Gonna break down the carb once she cools off. Plug looks pretty good??

I cleaned the carb and having the same issues. After warm up and WOT for a little bit (I go from my ‘hood to the next, with a little WOT in-between) it starts sputtering and coughing. Any thoughts?

Check your points gap. If its too wide it will idle perfectly but pop and fart in the upper rev range similar to what you are describing

For what it’s worth, I put the chrome pipe I’d bought from CHP a year or so ago on YellowBullet3, and it suuuuuuuucks. (There again, it was a $69 pipe.) It sounds NOTHING like the original and *may* actually be part of YB2’s vibration issue. Too bad the original pipe is rusted in two. I’m seriously considering taping it back together. :/

Does anyone know of an exhaust system that sounds right?
